BASQUE COUNTRY: THE TOMATO

The product we chose to follow its track was the tomato. Tomatoes are produced in our farms for self consume or retail sales but because of our land characteristics and climate, we only produce it in summer and we cannot have an industrial production. That is why, when we go to the supermarket and we find a wide viarety of tomatoes, it is hard for us to choose the best option. This is what we found out and how:
1- An agronomist from the village came to school on September the 22nd. He has a winter garden where he produces all kinds of seasonable vegetables for self consume and for ecological baskets that he sells together with other producers. He plants all kinds of tomatoes. He explained lots of interesting things to us.

This is the infogram we completed with all the information we gathered. As well as the infogram, we made a Prezi presentation and a comic on- line.

2- We visited MERCABILBAO a wholesaler that supplies food to both: big supermarkets and small shops in the area. There, we not only learnt about tomatoes but also about where food comes from and how it is distributed. We learnt about slow food too.

Bulgaria:

This is our Lyutenitsa session.

The children have followed the track of tomatoes and peppers from the fieild to canneries and markets and from there to our homes. They have found out that not all sorts are suitable for making lyutenitsa. Experts prefer tomatoes Ralitsa, Conserva (Tin) and Buffalo Heart. As for peppers, they choose Black Kapia and Kurtovska Kapia. These sorts contain more pulp and less water. The students have pointed out that there is a great variety of recipes for lyutenitsa with a lot of different ingredients: aubergines, carrots, potatoes, even cheese.

They have read the labels of two very popular lyutenitsas (Parvomai and Olineza) and have discovered that they contain corn starch in contrast to home-made ones.

They have compared home-made and industrial lyutenitsas: their ingredients, price, enviromental cost, taste and cousistence.

Our last project was on marine fish as our country is surrounded by the sea.
Fishing is one of the oldest trades of man which definitely helps him in survival. We found the food value of fish. The dietary value of fish is massive since fish are rich in components such as: minerals, vitamins, proteins, fatty, acids etc. We have studied how fish are produced in our country and how this product affects the country's economy We discoveried how we can find fish on the market.and finally we saw methods of cooking fish.

We had the opportunity to visit the fish market in the city center. We had the pleasure to design and made by simple materials ornamental fish,as you can see below.
