We got 79 responses in Basque and 47 in English. Except for seven people, all the rest completed the survey on-line by accessing to the wiki page. As our community is a small one, we involved two other small schools from the area. Their oldest students answered the survey too.
As far as reserach is concerned, Primary 3rd and 4th class analyzed graphs about eating habits. These are the conclussions they came to:

EATING HABITS


Most people in the area have quite good eating habits:
They usually do at least four meals a day. That means that they have breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday and that they also have some kind of meal either at midday, in the afternoon or both. These in- between snack is fruit for more than half the respondents.
Three quarters of the people polled prefer traditional food to fast food when they go out for dinner.
About half the people grow their own vegetables and fruits at home and, though less than a quarter of the respondents, some produce almost all the food they consume.
Nevertheless there are also some habits to be improved:
- Three quarters of the respondents have some hot drink and cereals for breakfast. Half of them have something sweet like biscuits and only a quarter have other things like: fruit juice, ham, cheese, eggs..
- Half the people think that the most important meal is breakfast, more than a quarter think it is lunch and a few people think that the most important meal is dinner.
- Three quarters of the people spend less than half an hour for breakfast.
- All children usually do some kind of meal in front of the television or the computer and in those cases a quarter eat some kind of snack, another quarter eat pizza or sandwiches and another quarter have fruit.
- People eat much more meat than fish.
- A quarter of the respondents drink some kind of fizzy drink everyday..
MAIN AIMS TO FOCUS ON
- To appreciate fish proteins
- To reduce the consume of fizzy drinks which have lots of sugar.
- To pay a special attention to breakfast in terms of time ( less than half an hour is very little time) and nutrients beacuse it is the first meal of the day after 10- 11 hours without eating and because you should get enough energy from it to start the day.
- To avoid eating any important meal ( breakfast-lunch-dinner) in front of the TV or the computer.

Primary 5th and 6th analyzed shopping, recycling and healthy habits. These are the results:

SHOPPING


In our area, two out of three people buy their food in a supermarket. From those who buy their food in a grocer´s only one out of six buy it in the village´s grocery, mainly because the houses are very scattered and the shop is quite small.
More than half the people spend one hour or more buying their food. They mostly worry about quality and price (about two thirds); use-by-date and ingredients ( one third) ; origin ( a quarter) and 2 out of three mind about brands.
About half the people are used to reading labels, some others read them only sometimes, and 2 out of ten never read food labels.
A bit more than half the respondents use a shopping list and about three quarters always take a shopping bag or trolley with them when they go shopping. Only one sixth do never take one.
Only four people out of ten try to avoid excess package and about half the ones polled mind about E preservatives

MAIN AIMS TO FOCUS ON

- To increase the number of people that promotes village´s economy by buying (at least sometimes) in the local grocery.
- To increase the use of shopping bags and the number of people that avoid excess package.
- To encourage people to read food labels by showing them the kind of information they can find.
- To encourage the use of a shopping list as a way to stick to real needs and save time and money

WASTE


More than half the inhabitants in the area recycle paper and plastic but only one third mind about other wastes like: glass and organics. This is because they have bins for paper and plastic near their houses but there are no so many bins for glass and organics.
About half the people that recycle read the labels to know where to put their waste.
A bit less than half the respondents make compost at home which is not a lot if we bear in mind that this is a rural area where most families live in farm houses and detached or semidetached houses with a small garden.
MAIN AIMS TO FOCUS ON
- To encourage Town Council to place more bins for glass and organics
- To promote compost making through information and compost kits delivery.
- To inform families and Town Hall of the cost for environment that involves a non- recycling policy.

HEALTHY HABITS


Most responders think that what we eat influences our health and most people know that fast food is not good for us. They are also happy with their weigh and they think they eat quite healthy and drink enough water though the 30% drink less than a liter a day.
Nevertheless, they think that school should teach a bit more about healthy food and balanced diet.

- To learn more about healthy food at school.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS
After working for two years on healthy and sustainable habits, we cannot appreciate a real change. Nevertheless, we are not very concerned about it. On one hand, fewer people ( fewer adults, in fact) answered to the survey so the result is not very meaningful and on the other hand, we know it is very difficult to change people´s habits in such a short period.
Students and parents are much more concerned about the topic now than what they were two years ago. School, Town Council and local enterprises have been working together and will continue in the same way to change things little by little.
We can say that Eat wise made us think twice and reconsider our eating, shopping and recycling habits. Change will come as a natural process with the help of education.
